Midfielder steps into new role in football
At 14 year’s old, Pagham’s then U14 midfielder Oscar Lawrence decided enough was enough. Injuries had got just too much to continue with a sport he loved. But he wasn’t done with football – it was now time to put something back into the game and to train as a referee. We spoke to Oscar…
What made you decide to become a referee?
I had a season of non-stop injuries and missed playing football so much. I was offered to do a referee course to keep me involved in the club and involved in football.
How was the course?
I found the course interesting and good fun. The people that run the courses are really friendly.
Are you looking to further push yourself up the refereeing levels?
I am enjoying moving up the age groups for now and will see where it takes me. It’s definitely not something i have ruled out.
What have you enjoyed the most about referring?
The money has been amazing, a great job for someone my age. I also enjoy being part of football whilst not being able to play myself. Even when I am able to play again, refereeing is something I will still continue to do.
What have you NOT enjoyed the most?
I found reffing my first 9 a side game really daunting but now that I have done a few of those games I really prefer them.
What is your advice to anybody who may be thinking of training to be a referee?
Just do it. The hardest part is the first games, the nerves and not knowing what to expect. But once they are done it is really enjoyable. I am getting more confident with each game. I am also really looking forward to reffing the upcoming tournaments.
